What to Expect After Orthopedic Surgery for Your Pet

What to Expect After Orthopedic Surgery for Your Pet

At Alum Rock Animal Hospital, we know that bringing your San Jose area pet in for surgery is a big deal – and that you want to do everything you can to make sure your pet recovers fully. It's good to have questions after orthopedic surgery, which is a common type of pet surgery used to correct joint and hip problems. This type of surgery has become very efficient, but aftercare is still important: Here's what you should know about post-operative conditions.

Compression Bandages

While some surgeries may require casts or splints, most orthopedic surgeries now use a compression bandage to cover the incision. This bandage should stay on, but it may move around, so don't be surprised if you see the edges of the incision. Do not allow the bandage to become wet. Post-surgery, you should set an appointment to remove the bandage entirely and check on healing.

Food and Water

For the first couple of days after surgery, expect your pet to be quiet and still. You can offer them food during this time, but they may not eat right away. Make sure they have a bowl of water near wherever they are resting. If your pet has a special diet, make sure you talk about it with your vet before the surgery so you know what steps to take. Sometimes you will have antibiotics and sedatives that you will need to administer. Follow the instructions for these medications carefully to help speed recovery for your pet.

Bowel Movements

What happens when your post-operative pet needs to go to the bathroom? If your pet usually goes outside to relieve themselves, you can see if they want to do this daily as they recover. However, most pets won't need to have bowel movements for several days after surgery.

Follow-Up

In addition to removing bandages, you may need to make follow-up appointments to remove staples or check on how the wound is healing. During the time before the appointment, keep your pet from licking or chewing on the wound, which must be prevented. If this becomes an issue, don't hesitate to bring your pet in earlier to address the issue.
