Microchipping FAQS

What Is Microchipping?

Microchipping is the name of the procedure where a small microchip is placed just under the skin on the back of the neck of an animal. The microchip can help identify the animal as yours if it is ever lost or stolen.

Why Should I Get My Pet Microchipped?

Microchipping is a great way to keep track of your pet. We can provide peace of mind for pet owners who are afraid their cat or dog may run away, get lost, or even stolen. Pets that are microchipped are much more likely to be found and reunited with their owners than pets that are not.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Microchipping is quick and your pet can go home with you immediately following the procedure. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice. It is usually implanted with a needle just below the skin, between the shoulder blades. If your pet is small enough, you can feel the microchip just beneath the skin.

How a Microchip Works

The microchip contains a number unique to your pet. You will want to register the number online as soon as possible. Included will be your name, address, phone number, email address, and any other information that should be included in the identification of your pet. A microchipped pet that is taken to a shelter or veterinarian will be scanned for identification. Once your pet's number is found, it is looked up in an online registry so that you can be contacted.

The microchip is how a member of the veterinary office or shelter can contact and reunite you with your pet. Make sure to update your information when you move so that you can be found if your pet is lost.
